Welcome to the largest subterranean fortress in Europe. Fort Eben-Emael was built between 1932 and 1935 as one of the largest subterranean fortifications in Europe. The spectacular and innovative attack on the fort by an elite unit of German paratroopers on 10 May 1940 marked the tragic start of World War II in Western Europe.

But later Allied attacks by glider, based on the lessons of Eben-Emael— intensive training and mission rehearsal, surprise and speed—were largely successful. By late 1944 the United States had more than 10,000 assault gliders; they were used on D-Day in Normandy, in Operation Dragoon during the invasion of southern France and to cross the Rhine in Operation Varsity.
